Can running 90 metres to provoke a crowd ever be considered acceptable? If the answer is no, then so must the answer to 'can a crowd throwing items at a provoking player ever be considered acceptable?'
Emmanuel Adebayor would have us believe The City of Manchester Stadium is his ground and he can celebrate where he wants. If the fans don't want to be silenced then they shouldn't be shouting abuse in the first place.
Goading, however, is only ever a few steps from actually confronting a fan. If the confrontation isn't enough, what then?
The fan would argue the footballer gets paid £120K a week, money he gets because the fans pay £50 a match. If they feel wronged by a man made wealthy by their devotion they have a right to show it. They are the customer after all.
A baying mob, however, is only ever a few short steps away from throwing things, and after throwing, what then?
Both parties need to stop. If the player doesn't want the abuse then he shouldn't give it back. Equally if the fan hates the arrogance of the player, then it is hypocritical to lord it over them with abuse from the stands.
Somebody has to be the bigger man, or somebody soon, is going to end up getting more than just their feelings hurt.
