Manager Arsène Wenger says that he's happy with the progress made by defender Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgian international was signed in the summer for what now looks like a bargain £10 million, and funnily is the club's current top scorer with four goals.
The defence has been the subject of much debate for at least a couple of seasons now, and the 4-0 win over Wigan was also the club's first clean sheet in the league, disappointingly only the second in the season so far.
Wenger said: "I thought Thomas could adapt quickly but not as quickly as that. Let's be honest.
"[As for him being top scorer] I am quite crazy but perhaps not enough [for that]. What is good since the beginning of the season is that we have scored goals.
"We scored four today but we could have scored more. Even in the away games - Manchester United and Manchester City - we could have scored more. That shows we have the potential.
"[The clean sheet] is good for the confidence of the team that we did not concede today. It is little bit of the price to pay for our style of play. We had maybe 10 chances today and gave two away.
"But I think we'll be more and more solid when we get used to the way we want to play."
