What a game to mark Arsène Wenger becoming Arsenal's longest-serving manager. It summed up everything Arsène has brought to Arsenal, it had attacking flair, great passing and moving, counter-attack goals and a shakey defence as well as being played in the new stadium that Wenger has overseen and the 6-2 scoreline showed just how far Arsenal have moved away from the 1 nil to the Arsenal years under George Graham.
As good as Arsenal were going forward it was once again a poor defence that let the side down, always being left vulnerable and always looking like letting Blackburn back into the game, to be fair though it was the first time I have seen the Vermaelen-Gallas partnership look that easy to get at, maybe the occasion got to the team and the desperation to get a win for le boss overcame their defensive sensibilities.
On the other hand it was probably the best attacking an Arsenal side has produced in recent years, with the importance of Fabregas easy to see, as he produced the game of his life that included four assists and a stunning goal. As much as the kissing of the badge is put down it was, for me personally, nice to see the passion he showed for the shirt in sending a message out to Xavi and Pique who seem unable to get the message.
The subs is another positive to take out of the game, Walcott, Bendtner and Ramsey show just how much strength in depth Arsenal have this year, at least up front. Ramsey impressed and showed just how much he is learning from the club captain, Fabregas, as he looked for the gaps and the runs, as well as launching a cross field pass to Bendtner who took it inside and finished emaculately, Ramsey showed to me that in a few years time he could well be Fabregas' equal. Walcott showed he might just be the finisher we need, as he slotted in with his first competitive touch of the season, as for Bendtner, if he shows consistency he could well be just what we need in terms of a big man.
The 'we'll score more than you' tactic, while entertaining still needs some refining and given an experienced defensive midfielder in the Mascherano or Makelele shap, Arsenal could easily be the team to beat this season. As it is, every team and I mean every team including the Barcelona's, the Chelsea's and Madrid's of this world will not be able to stop Arsenal from scoring, the question is will the defence be able to back up the goals. Arsène Wenger will certainly hope 13 is not unlucky as he goes in search of a first trophy in 4 years.
