Many Arsenal fans questioned the manager Arsène Wenger's decision over the summer to not bring in a striker to replace the club's leading goalscorer.
Defender Thomas Vermaelen was the only purchase of a quiet transfer window, though Russian international Andrey Arshavin was brought in at the beginning of the year.
But Wenger has now revealed the real reason why he chose not to bring in another striker.
Despite only featurng mainly in Carling Cup matches, the Frenchman believes that young Mexican starlet Carlos Vela is destined to be a huge star for us.
The manager holds the 20-year-old in such high regard that he likened him to former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler.
Wenger said: "We've had no offers for Carlos and we are extending his contract at the moment.
"The problem we have is that we have some very good young players, but the players who are in front of them are also young.
"But Carlos was the reason I didn't replace Emmanuel Adebayor in the summer. He's that good.
"He's like Robbie Fowler, in that he needs very little time to make a decision in the box, he is very relaxed when he finishes."
