I'm sure by now we've all read enough about our home mauling to Chelsea. I'm also sure that we all have plenty questions about where we are going with this squad, why we don't seem to have shaken off our blatant problems from last season and how best to get things kick started.
Personally I am hoping that the current squad will turn into a genuine super power to dominate the landscape for the next few seasons. I am hoping though, not expecting. One could say that we are better off this year than we were at the corresponding time last season. That may be true if you're an optimist but we still haven't closed a gap on the winners. Merely pushed away some of the lower-placed teams.
Having spent a lot of time in the car over the last 24 hours, to and from hospital to see the other half and to and from work in impossible conditions, I couldn't come up with too many answers but lots of questions.
For starters, how long does Arshavin have to be on the pitch before he produces a match-winning moment of quality. How long more before Cesc starts giving some stick, physically to his opponents and verbally to his teammates. How much longer will Wenger stick with a Plan A option only. For a man of his intelligence surely he can come up with more ways then one to use the tools at his disposal.
Also how much longer is Almunia going to get in goals? It is very clear to anyone who watches football that a good goalkeeper is vital and if you want to be on the world stage then you need a world class goalkeeper. We don't have one and considering the efforts of Mannone and Fabianski when given an extended run in the side we're not going to inherit one anytime soon.
After 4 full seasons as an Arsenal player why are we surprised when Robin van Persie gets injured and why in the name of god hasn't anyone in the Arsenal management team spotted a pattern emerging and got a contingency plan in place.
It's all well and good assembling players of great potential but if we are to hide behind van Persie's season ending injury then we are displaying 2 things. Firstly we are no better than Liverpool, and look at them, depending on one striker to do everything and neglecting obvious deficiencies elsewhere in the squad. Secondly we are mentally weak and will use the first available opportunity to get out the safety net and make excuses.
Short cuts and excuses never won anything, I doubt we'll be the first to succeed. From now on I would personally like to see 3 things. A bit of menace in our play, mental strength and 100% honesty. Its not a specific position on the pitch that we need to replace, although it would be a start, it's a specific type of person. A specific type of person who might answer more than one of my questions.
