Whenever Wenger says or does anything, you can't help but feel there's more to it than meets the eye.
Since the Chelsea game he's said and done some potentially crucial things.
I suggested in an earlier article that he should prioritise the Carling Cup, and throw his reserve policy out of the window, but as we can see from the squad announced today, that won't be happening.
He has also hinted that he'll be in the market for a striker in January. Obviously he approached it with his usual caution, saying we will only go for a deal if it 'suits us'.
Sounds to me like he's saying to Eduardo, Vela, Bendtner and Walcott - "Show me you can replace van Persie, or it WILL suit me to add another striker".
I think he's also saying "A high league finish is still my priority". Of all our first choice strikers, only Vela is in the squad tonight. Confusing really, as Eduardo and Walcott could really use any playing time they can get with their current lack of fitness and form.
It's quite a big game tonight, but a winnable one, but it seems Wenger really doesn't want too many of his main players to be distracted by it.
If Wenger is in the market for a striker, I think it might be wise to try and find one on loan, and invest in a proper goalkeeper. Buying Lehmann really kicked our defence into shape for the 2003/04 season and we've been worse since he left. A strong and confident goalkeeper can really help organise things at the back, as Wenger and his coaching team can't seem to do it themselves.
We'll see if Fabianski gets the nod tonight. He's had some mixed performances for us, so I still don't know where I stand on his ability.
Anyway, I hope the kids can give us another night to remember in the Carling Cup this evening. We've passed bigger tests in this competition, so I'm sure we can do it again. The team selection kind of says "the pressure's off", and we usually play well in those situations.
Still though, I'm not sure it's a policy that actually properly prepares our young players for regular football at this club. Denilson and Diaby looked fantastic in this competition a couple of seasons ago, but don't look up to it in the first-team, so we have to be cautious if the likes of Ramsey and Wilshere rip City apart tonight.
I still hope they do though.
