Wenger: I had to take another approach on Sunday

Manager Arsène Wenger has admitted that he had to take a different approach on Sunday when speaking to his team at half-time against Liverpool.

It was reported (and partially confirmed by the man himself) that the players were given a very vocal kick up their behinds when they entered the dressing room at 1-0 down against the Scousers.

Wenger admitted that his half-time 'talk' surprised the players, and says that at times, it is best to adopt a different approach when briefing the team.

He explained: "Ideally a manager should have all the qualities, and always have the right response adapted to the situation.

"I have been in this job for a long, long time, I act exactly as I think I have to and that suits me. We just try to adapt to every single situation that we face.

"Most of the time, [the dressing room] is very quiet, sometimes it is more agitated.

"On Sunday I believe the players wanted to perform well from the first minute but we played a little bit with the handbrake on because we lost against Chelsea and we went into another big game thinking we cannot afford to lose it. Sometimes when you play with the handbrake that is the best way to lose it.

"What is good is that the players responded. And they did that because of their character and their quality."

Striker Theo Walcott said that the manager really woke the players up when they walked into the dressing room, but applauded his team when they turned the game around and won 2-1.

The England international said: "None of us were happy with the first half. We were 1-0 down and hadn't played well.

"We like to keep things in the dressing room to ourselves but the boss just showed his passion for the game and that he has belief in us.

"It woke us up and that's what you have got to do as a manager. It worked.

"So coming in at the end of the game and getting a round of applause from the boss showed that we listened to him. All the players were bubbling as you would with a 2-1 win at Anfield. It was great to see.

"The boss is always happy every time we win a game and these big games are the most important ones in the season.

"Now we have got to build on this and look forward to Wednesday at Burnley."
