Diaby keen to stand-in for departing Song

Midfielder Abou Diaby has admitted that he is more than interested in taking on the duties of departing colleague Alex Song, who has left for the African Cup of Nations.

The two have been deployed in varying roles, with Song more defensive-minded and Diaby playing further upfront in certain games.

But Song is seeing that it is an opportunity for him to plug a huge hole in the team's formation.

Diaby said: "I will talk about that with the manager and if he wants me to play in that position, I am happy to do it.

"We will see what happens.

"Alex is a very important player in our team. Because he is going, we have to replace him and make sure we do the same job without him."

Denilson would be the ideal substitute but the Brazilian is currently injured, along with captain Francesc Fabregas.
