Captain Francesc Fabregas has said that perhaps he had pushed himself too hard and thus aggravated the hamstring injury he was carrying.
The midfielder was introduced to the game as a substitute and was brought on by manager Arsène Wenger when it looked like there was no way through a stubborn Aston Villa defence.
Fabregas revealed that he had told the medical team that he wouldn't hold back if he was introduced to the match and that there was a risk the injury could get worse.
Speaking in his match day notes, the Spaniard said: "I picked up the injury when I scored the second goal – just as I pulled the trigger as you say. If I had not made the 50 yard sprint then I probably would not have aggravated the injury.
"Sometimes in football you need to do it though. I said to the physios before the game, 'if I play, you know me, if I am on the pitch, I will be everywhere.'
"I cannot stay in a small area and just pass it, I like to move, forward, right, left, back. I am like that, and even when I know I am not 100 per cent fit, I can't help doing that when I'm out there.
"Lately I was feeling the best I have physically in my career. At that moment I felt very strong, I've never seen myself run so fast on TV, so I thought it was right to go for it.
"Theo gave me an amazing pass, and fortunately I made it 2-0."
