A little bit of luck can go a long way

Hi guys, I'm back. Actually, how many people noticed or cared that my weekly blogs stopped for the best part of a month. For those of you who did notice, Hi Mam, I was off getting married and enjoying a honeymoon stateside.

A few things struck me while I was Orlando and then the Caribbean. Firstly there is quite a few passionate and knowledgeable soccer fans in the states. One taxi driver in particular upon hearing I was an Arsenal fan made quite a good point about players like Jack Wilshere making a semi-breakthrough at senior level while still in their teens.

It has more to do with the fact that they don't rely on physical attributes and more on skill. Song you will agree is turning out to be a calibre player that few expected when he was 20. Its hard to outmuscle a 25 year old when your 19 however pace and skill are natural and can be used to evade an opponent no matter their size. Breakthroughs can sometimes have as much to do with your playing position as your peak potential.

Secondly a disaster isn't losing Robin van Persie for a season. To be honest losing Fabregas, van Persie and Arshavin for an entire season doesn't constitute a disaster. My first port of call on a week long Caribbean cruise was due to be Haiti on Tuesday the 12th of January.

That is a date that will now be remembered for the biggest humanitarian disaster of our time. The only reason I wasn't in Haiti when the earth quake struck was because it was raining that morning and the ships captain decided that we would move on and dock in Jamaica a few hours early. A disaster goes way beyond sport, let alone an individual in an individual sport.

Finally, while contemplating what could have been had our boat docked in Haiti and some 2,000 non-natives disembarked I realised that a little bit of luck at the right time shouldn't be underestimated.

It has been mentioned on more than one occasion how important it is for our title ambitions that Fabregas, Vermaelen and Gallas stay fit and playing well. Our two recent games against Bolton could quite possibly let us facing the toughest few weeks of the fixture calendar without two of that triumvirate.

Fabregas was clearly targeted and when you see how easily Gallas took out someone's entire season you begin to realise how brittle players can be. Speaking of that tackle I am surprised that Gallas doesn't receive a retrospective ban. And before you disagree ask yourself this. Had that happened to one of our players how would you feel, if it happened to Fabregas and he joined van Persie on the sidelines then how would you feel and what would our chances of winning the The Premier League be.

A little bit of luck can go a long way.
