Manager Arsène Wenger has confirmed that the club's medical team are doing all they can to get defender Thomas Vermaelen fit for the match against Manchester United.
It's not looking good however, and there is still a possibility that Sol Campbell will have to step-in and partner WIlliam Gallas in defence.
Vermaelen suffered what was thought to be a broken bone in the match against Aston Villa but further diagnosis has revealed this to not be the case.
Wenger said: "The good news we have on Vermaelen is that there is no fracture.
"We have to assess his knee today, there is still a small chance that he will play on Sunday.
"We will do the maximum to get him fit but at the moment it looks unlikely. It should be a very short-term injury.
"It looked to be a two-month problem, now at the latest he should be ready for the Chelsea game."
