In this non-news week while we're left licking our wounds after United's emphatic Emirates win, I thought it might be fun to remember that we're not the only ones who have gone through this pain. So here's my collection of my favourite 'home humiliations'.
Germany 1 - 5 England - Germany had only ever lost one World Cup qualifier before England came from behind to pull off a surprising and memorable result against their old rivals.
Juventus 0 - 3 Man Utd - Back when Juve were a serious European force, winning Serie A and losing on penalties in the Champions League final that same year, they were very disappointing as United showed up and made easy work of them with two goals from Ryan Giggs and a Van Nistelrooy strike.
Inter Milan 1 - 5 Arsenal - Inter handed us a bit of a home humiliation of our own at Highbury with a 3-0 win in the earlier game, but facing Champions League elimination in the face, Arsenal turned on a memorable performance when it really mattered, battering Inter with a Thierry Henry masterclass. Two goals and two assists from the Frenchman left the San Siro fans to witness their first home defeat to English opposition.
Man Utd 1 - 3 Chelsea - After a disappointing season, United were playing for pride against Chelsea, but were distincly second best to the newly crowned champions who, with a few players rested, still managed to pick holes through United's defence and break United's record Premiership points tally in the process.
Real Madrid 0 - 3 Barcelona - Back when Ronaldinho was at his best, the Brazilian added to former Real striker Samuel Eto'o's early goal with with two superb solo efforts at the Bernebeau that even prompted the home fans to applaud their vastly superior rivals after the game.
Liverpool 1 - 4 Chelsea - Fortress Anfield was the stage for Chelsea, who were hardly prolific scorers under José Mourinho, to run riot and cut Liverpool open with a couple of tap-ins for Joe Cole and Geremi after first half goals from Frank Lampard and Damien Duff.
Liverpool 3 - 6 Arsenal - I don't need to remind many gooners of this one. A bit of a classic here, with our first-team having won 3-1 at Anfield a few days earlier, we found ourselves 5-1 up in this one having missed a penalty. We let them get a couple of goals back before getting a 6th. You know things are bad when Julio Baptista is scoring freely against you. We made Anfield our second home that week.
Man Utd 1 - 4 Liverpool - In one of English football's greatest rivalries, Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty put United a goal ahead, before Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard turned things around before half-time. Liverpool added two late on and could even have had a 5th if not for Gerrard missing a late sitter. A humiliating result for the league leaders and their biggest home defeat for over a decade.
Real Madrid 2 - 6 Barcelona - On their way to taking the La Liga title off their fiercest rivals, Barca handed Spain's most successful club a real thrashing as the likes of Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry played Real off the park in front of their own fans.
Next up - Chelsea 0 - 5 Arsenal this weekend. Denilson with four first half goals before a late solo effort from Manuel Almunia, who takes on all ten of Chelsea's outfield players before rounding Petr Cech and slotting home. It'll happen.
