Arsène Wenger is up to his usual tricks, confusing us all about his transfer window intentions.
It was widely hoped by Arsenal fans that some reinforcements would be brought in by the manager this January, but in the end few were surprised when none came.
The boss insisted on the final day of the transfer window that he would not be looking to make any last-minute deals, but has now revealed he was close to bringing someone in.
In an interview with Arsenal TV Online, he said: "We did try to sign someone, yes. I do not like to lie and I do not like to put any player in a difficult position at the club where he is at the moment, so I'll say nothing about it."
Who was this mystery man? Why didn't it happen? Is Wenger making it all up? I guess we'll never know. Judging from his following comments, it doesn't sound like he was too fussed about not getting his man.
"In England, it seems all the problems are sorted out by buying players, but I do not believe that.
"I said we have too many players when they are all back but that has never been the case this year.
"Everyone advises you to buy but, at the end of the month, you have to pay the wages and across Europe at the moment you can buy 50 clubs if you have enough money because they have financial problems.
"We manage as well the Club within our financial resources and when you listen to people you always have to buy five or six players. But at the end of the day you have to pay them."
I don't believe he tried to sign anyone. I think he's trying to show the fans that he does at least TRY to find new players, but ultimately if he doesn't want to reveal anything about this mystery player then why say anything in the first place? It sounds rather attention-seeking if you ask me.
He said on the final day that he had no intention of signing anyone, and even though he says he did, he still goes on about his main priority, which is keeping the club in a stable financial position. He continues to defend his policy.
Frustrating stuff from the manager, but it would be equally frustrating if it's true and we missed out on a new player. I guess it's best not to think about it.
