Defender Thomas Vermaelen is thankful that the suspected broken leg he suffered against Everton was less serious than initially feared.
It turned out that the Belgian captain had hurt a bone, rather than suffer a fracture, and was available to play against champions Manchester United where he scored a consolation goal in the 3-1 defeat.
Speaking to the official matchday programme, Vermaelen said: "I was a little bit worried at first but suppose I was lucky!
"You never know, because it was the smaller leg bone that I hurt, you don't feel the pain when one's fractured as you would with the larger one.
"It turned out that I could play without pain against Manchester United, but after that game I had some more problems so I went for a scan.
"We could see then that there was a big bruise on the bone, and that's all – so it's painful but that can be controlled with medicine and when it's not broken you can't do too much wrong.
"It's not a big problem to play – yes, it's still there and will take some time to go away, but it's not dangerous."
