Cesc and that old Barca rumour

Cesc and that old Barca rumour

The rest of this season is massive for the future of this Arsenal side. Not just because the title is still there to be won but the rest of this season must convince the captain that there is a bright future at the Emirates stadium.

The continuous stream of stories written about Cesc Fabregas continues to flow and again in the Sunday papers I read that Barcelona have set aside £60million for a summer flutter on our captain. Yes, I know, that Barcelona have denied any talks this week as has Arsène Wenger and even the man himself has to a certain extent denied it, however the stories don't stop and can there really be smoke without fire?

During last week the Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud said this: "It is sometimes said that there is no smoke without fire. This is a blaze. It seems strange that so many sources are consistent," he is of course talking about our apparent move for Marouane Chamakh, but could the same be said of Barcelona's pursuit of Fabregas?

Sure Chamakh is certain to leave Bordeaux in the summer and he himself has even spoke of his impending move out of France and on the other hand, Fabregas has spoke of his love for both Arsenal and London in the past. But in essence that quote refers to the sheer amount of newspaper stories linking Chamakh to us and is that not what is happening with Fabregas and Barcelona, even if the circumstances surrounding the newspaper rumours is entirely different.

If you were to ask me the straight question whether or not our captain was going to move this summer then having said all of this I would still have to say no. Whether that is my head or my heart talking is another matter. I would have thought if you asked Fabregas himself that same question the answer would be the same as mine but didn't Henry, Ronaldo and co. say the same before their moves to Spain.

Fabregas seems to love the club, in fact Barcelona, his hometown club, are probably the only club that he values as highly as Arsenal. I think he also seems to love the city, his club mates, boss and the football we play, so everything looks good, the one thing that is missing is that illusive trophy and that is the one and only thing that Barcelona has over Arsène Wenger's club.

Having not won anything since 2005, why would he leave now, especially as the club looks to be on the up both on the field and on the balance sheet, and that is one reason why I don't believe he will leave, he might just give it one more push next season and see how the land lies then.

Playing devil's advocate, would Arsenal and Arsène Wenger find £60million more useful, add that to the money saved during the past two transfer windows along with the Touré and Adebayor sales, and it would make a huge transfer kitty with which the side could be rebuilt and maybe improved. Or dare I say it, the money could be put in the bank, pay off the stadium debt a good few years quicker and endure life without Fabregas.

Of course this is all hearsay, for all I know this whole piece could be based on nothing more than whispers and unfounded rumours but I think more often than not, when there is as much written about something as there has been with Cesc, it usually has a bone of truth.

I don't think the captain will leave in the summer, Arsène will sell the idea of Chamakh and van Persie firing their way to trophies and Barcelona will have to go spend their money elsewhere but one thing is for sure if we don't win a competition this year, the next few months must be used to show the captain what a great team, club and future there is in London.
