Arsène Wenger is unsure whether Carlos Vela will be able to play himself into contention for a place in Mexico's World Cup squad.
Vela has only made a handful of appearances for Arsenal this season and Wenger believes injuries have disrupted his progress.
The manager maintained, however, that his job is to pick the strongest available team for Arsenal, and not to worry about the World Cup.
He said: "I hope he will he play for Mexico in the World Cup. I don't make the team, I make only the Arsenal team.
"For me Carlos Vela is a very talented player who missed the preparation of the season and was then injured."
The Mexican didn't make the squad for Arsenal's win over Sunderland, but Wenger believes that, as he matures, he could still make an impact for the Gunners this season.
He added: "Today he had a groin problem and that is why I didn't consider him."
"What he needs is to be injury free and get a good run of games. He is a very talented player who is maturing now. When you are 17, 18 it is easy. At 20 you realise it is not as easy as it looks.
"He has gone through that stage now and I am confident he will do well."
