It's been a few days since our season effectively came to an end in embarrassing fashion at Wigan. At the time I like many was going through a real range of emotions, from anger to frustration to confusion at just how that happened. But now a few days have past and having read just about every pundit discussing our season, I feel much more comfortable with our season and about our future.
I've heard people calling for Wenger's head, changes in the backroom staff and coming up with many different ways our season could have been improved. However I really don't see much of a need to panic, in my opinion we are still the best placed team for the future in England and I would still maintain that if Robin van Persie was fit for even a month or two longer more over the season, we would have been even closer to winning something.
I saw a stat on Sky Sports News a few days ago, Arsenal have spent over £100 million pounds less than the Chelsea's and Man City's since our last Premiership title, that is the main reason why in the future we will be in much better shape than these teams. Those sides spending freely and easily, are now realising they need to bring down their expenses and cannot just keep spending on anything and everything they need. Chelsea in particular are now going more and more down our route, increasingly looking towards youth and trying to bring down their wage bill, running the rish of losing players like Joe Cole.
I also read about the current Barcelona side, they may be conquering all before them at the moment but what I didn't realise is that they too went through a similar trophy drought as their youth such as Xavi and Iniesta took time to grow, that is exactly what we have to do, we just need to be patient.
I'm not saying we should stick with the exact same team we have now, we do need new players, particularly in defence and most importantly in goal. However with players like Denilson, Diaby, Walcott and Ramsey, we have to be patient, we have to trust that they will grow with every season, grow in a similar fashion to Song and Nasri this season.
How would you feel if you were in their position, trying your hardest to grow and improve only to see your mentor lose faith in you and bring in an older, more expensive replacement. Unfortunately we have to take the high road and trust in Wenger that these players have what it takes and given time and support they will grow into the dominant force Barca are today.
I would rather be in our position than an ageing Chelsea side that is trying, probably in vain, to get their players to take lower wages. I would rather be in our position than a Manchester United side that is heavily in debt and has fans rebelling against their owners. We have a young side that will grow and get better each year, a responsible manager and a brand new stadium that once paid off will give us huge financial possibilities, not unlike the current Barcelona side.
With a clean slate on the injury front, maybe a new goalkeeper, new defender and Chamakh up front I do feel positive about next season, but despite the need to bring in a couple of new faces the most important battle might be keeping or key players. The annual rumours coming out of Barca and Real have already begun and apparently Clichy, Robin and Cesc are all targets, it is imperative that we keep these players or it will be like taking one step forward and two steps back.
But the main point I'm trying to get across is that the panic and anger that came out immediately after the Wigan game was uncalled for, if you look at the big picture in the Premier League and compare our big picture with our rivals things look a lot brighter. All it is going to take is a bit of patience and trust that these players we have now will continue to grow and like the Barcelona side will grow in to a major player at home and in Europe. Add in one or two signings in crucial areas of the pitch and I really hold out a lot of hope about next season but now more than ever we have to trust in the mantra, 'In Arsène We Trust.'
