French coach Raymond Domenech is optimistic that defender William Gallas will be fit for the World Cup finals in South Africa.
The defender was included in Domenech's provisional 30-man squad, with the caveat that he was still recovering from a long-term injury sustained during the domestic season.
And the French have a friendly on Wednesday, a match which Gallas will most probably not be risked in.
Domenech said: "There is always the uncertainty with Gallas. We can be optimistic from what we have seen in training, but that is not the same as in a game.
"We do not know if he will be okay for Costa Rica.
"It does not hurt now, but we must be careful with the calf. We want it to be ready for the World Cup."
Team mate and left back Gaël Clichy, another one of the four man Arsenal contingent representing France at the World Cup, said that he was confident Gallas would recover in time.
Clichy added: "William is our main man at the back and we need him.
"I have no doubt he will play at the World Cup. He has hiked up with us in the snow and has been training with no problems.
"I know him well, he's strong, he won't give up and he will make the trip with us."
