Merida reveals Wenger's disappointment over transfer

Former Arsenal midfielder Fran Merida, who joined Atletico Madrid last week on a four year contract, has revealed manager Arsène Wenger's disappointment over the transfer.

Merida has struggled to break into the Arsenal first team, with Denilson or Alex Song being the preferred partners to captain Cesc Fabregas, and a move away from the Emirates was always on the cards.

The 20-year-old was presented to the Madrid fans yesterday, after having successfully completed a medical, and will officially become an Atletico Madrid player on 1 July, after his current deal with Arsenal ends.

Speaking at the press conference, Merida said: "There are circumstances in life. I was very comfortable at Arsenal, but when I knew of the interest from Atletico then I did not hesitate.

"I talked to my agent and I told him of my desire to accept the offer. Wenger has always looked after me and my family since I arrived in London.

"I have a very good relationship with him. I am and I will be eternally grateful.

"Obviously he was very displeased with my departure, but he wished me luck and behaved like a gentleman."

One of the factors that convinced Merida to return to Spain was the fact that he had the opportunity to play in his favoured position behind the strikers, a role that was usually reserved for Robin van Persie or Samir Nasri.

Merida joined Arsenal in 2005, but found it difficult to force his way into the first team. He then spent the second half of the 2007/08 season on-loan to Real Sociedad, where he made 17 appearances, scoring one goal.

It was thought that next year would be his year at the club, after impressive showings in certain games this season.

Arsenal Mania wishes Merida all the best in his new career at Atletico Madrid.
