Gallas future still unclear

Defender William Gallas has still not agreed a new deal with Arsenal, according to reports coming from France's World Cup training camp.

The 32-year-old former captain is soon to be out of contract but can now sign for any club, and there are reportedly a number of Italian clubs in contact with the Frenchman.

Gallas' agent, Pierre Frelot, refused to be drawn on the transfer speculation surrounding his client, with Roma apparently being at the head of the queue for Gallas' signature.

He said: "I can't say anything at this time. The player is still owned by Arsenal, although his contract is expiring.

"I cannot comment on the (Roma) reports that appear daily in the media. There is no news about developments and the future of William."

France start their World Cup campaign against Uruguay on 11 June.

Gallas has been in contact with Arsenal over signing a new 12-month rolling contract, manager Arsène Wenger not having made an exception to his over-30 policy.

Chairman Peter Hill-Wood also revealed that the club were unwilling to meet the player's "unreasonable" wage demands, resulting in a stalemate in talks between player and club.

Gallas formed a strong partnership with new recruit Thomas Vermaelen at the start of last season, though injuries and a series of goalkeeping errors saw us concede an alarmingly high number of goals for a club aspiring to be champions.
