It seems that Barcelona are about to concede defeat in their bid to sign Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, after denying reports from Monday that we had told them to come back and double their offer.
The Catalans are thought to have made an initial €35 million bid, which was flatly rejected by the club, the official statement from the club reading:
Yesterday evening we received an offer from Barcelona for Cesc and in response, we immediately and resolutely told them once again that we have no intention of selling our captain.
To be clear, we will not make any kind of counterproposal or enter into any discussion. Barcelona have publicly stated that they will respect our position and we expect that they will keep their word.
Most UK newspapers took this response as a "double your money offer" and reported that we had set a price of €70 million for our captain.
But Barcelona director general Joan Oliver has rejected this speculation, insisting they have heard nothing from the Gunners.
He said: "They said they would not sell, it's logical therefore that they have not set a price for him.
"We made a formal offer. The only official response we have from Arsenal is that they are not ready to sell the player, for which it would be difficult for them to be putting a price when they say they are not selling.
"On our part, after having made an offer we are ready to sign the deal this very morning.
"We still have time to do it, but it is a deal we cannot do just by ourselves."
