Defender Emmanuel Eboue is out of the World Cup after the Ivory Coast were knocked out of the tournament, despite beating North Korea 3-0.
The Elephants needed to win by a margin greater than Portugal's 7-0 thrashing of the Koreans, and also hope that the Portugese lost their final match against Brazil.
However, Portugal forced a draw against the world number ones, giving them 5 points in total, one more than the Ivory Coast, who finished third in Group G.
Ivory Coast Sven Goran-Eriksson said: "We should be very proud of ourselves and the county should be proud of us.
"We play good football and I think the future belongs to this country."
Meanwhile, captain Cesc Fabregas came on as a 55th minute substitute for Spain in their final match against Honduras.
The Spaniards' World Cup hopes were hanging in the balance and they needed a win against Chile to guarantee progress to the knockout rounds.
David Villa fired the European champions ahead midway through the first half and their advantage was doubled eight minutes before the break through Andres Iniesta.
Chile hit back in an eventful encounter, but couldn't find the equaliser.
However, they still progressed to the next round of the competition after Switzerland could only force a draw against Honduras.
The Spaniards eventually finished as group winners in Group H, and will face Portugal in a mouth watering second round encounter.
Manager Vicente del Bosque admits that his European champions were feeling the pressure in South Africa. He said: "There's a lot of pressure in the World Cup.
"We know what people expect in Spain and we're trying to give our all. Let's see what we achieve.
"We have reacted to a very difficult situation and have done well. We know there are no easy games. We want to do well."
