I'm getting some tip-offs and reports that striker Robin van Persie has requested a squad number change for the new season.
The Dutchman is thought to have requested for the now vacant number 10 jersey, previously worn by defender William Gallas. The number 10 shirt of course, was also worn by club legend Dennis Bergkamp.
Manager Arsène Wenger had given Gallas the shirt as he didn't want any comparisons to be made with Bergkamp if another attacking player wore the shirt.
But if these reports are true, then van Persie obviously feels confident enough to feel that he deserves the number 10 shirt. It would also be nice to finally have a number 10 and number 9 up front for Arsenal again.
Somehow, having a defender wear the number 10 shirt never seemed quite right to me, and I wished that Wenger would stop messing about with the squad numbers.
New signing Laurent Koscielny (who's arrival has yet to be officially announced by the club) is reported to be getting the number 6 shirt, previously worn by captain Tony Adams and more recently, Philippe Senderos.
If Koscielny does partner Thomas Vermaelen in the heart of the defence, then we will also finally have a number 5 and 6 as our central defence partnership.
