New signing Laurent Koscielny has said that he will need some time to adapt to his new surroundings and team mates, and especially to the fast pace of the Premier League.
The 24-year-old is not expecting to walk straight into the Arsenal first team to partner Thomas Vermaelen, but if manager Arsène Wenger cannot find another central defender, he may be required to do so anyway.
Instead, he wants to get into the team on merit, not just because there is a shortage of staff that can play in the central defence area.
Koscielny joined Arsenal for a fee thought to be around €8.5 million, and has been given the squad number 6, previously worn by Tony Adams and Philippe Senderos.
He said: "I will need time to adapt. I have to earn a position in the team and play.
"Nothing is for sure so far. I believe I will have to work hard, doing a lot of body-building exercises to resist Premier League forwards.
"I am not strongly built, but I make up for it with some cleverness, positioning and anticipation.
"I believe the manager has appreciated my state of mind, my concentration on the game."
