Wenger wants higher finish

Arsène Wenger says he hopes Arsenal will improve and finish higher than their third place finish last season.

The Gunners were close contenders for the title, and were ultimately left disappointed with some poor results in their last few games, leaving them behind Chelsea and Manchester United.

Pre-season has just started for Wenger's side, and he is pleased with what he has seen so far from his team.

He said: "We finished third last season, so of course we try to improve.

"We have six players coming back to join us when we go to Austria, and then the hard work starts."

The manager added that the strength of Arsenal's new signings Marouane Chamakh and Laurent Koscienly could give his side the quality to go further this year.

The two new recruits made their debuts in the friendly win over Barnet, and the boss was pleased with what he saw from them.

He said: "Both new signings did well over the 45 minutes.

"Koscielny adjusted slowly to the required challenges in the air, and you could see Chamakh was very good at bringing players in. With our creative midfielders, that will be suited to our game."
