Wenger provides transfer update, still looking basically

Manager Arsène Wenger says that he is still in the transfer market for a defender, admitting that currently, the squad is perhaps a bit light in numbers.

With Mikael Silvestre, Philippe Senderos and William Gallas all departing the club, we are a bit light in central defence, but there is a chance that Sol Campbell might sign an extension to his contract.

Wenger said: "There is no news on a defensive signing but numbers wise we are short in defence.

"The situation is still open for Sol Campbell and for the rest we are still looking."

In terms of strikers however, Wenger admits that he would not be considering any replacements for the recently departed Eduardo da Silva, saying that there are enough strikers at the club.

Eduardo signed for Ukraine champions Shakhtar Donetsk for a fee of about £6 million.

Wenger added: "Eduardo is an outstanding player but he is 27 and he needs to play. He will have that opportunity with Shakhtar. Up front we have plenty of players and I believe it is good for his future.

"We still have Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner to come back and join the squad and we now have Marouane Chamakh. I don't think I will go into the market for a centre forward."

Midfielders, it also seems, are off the agenda, but the boss was speaking specifically about young Jack WIlshere.

The 17-year-old is adamant of not going back to reserve team football, wanting to play first team football, regardless of whether it's at Arsenal or on-loan to another club.

Wenger finished: "At the moment, I want Jack to gain experience and, if possible, at Arsenal. I will give him a chance to play now.

"I want to see if he can integrate with the first team. Of course, I will make that decision later. Ideally, it is better that he gains experience with us."
