Wenger: Fabregas will not return till early August

Captain Cesc Fabregas will not return to the squad for pre-season training till early August, according to manager Arsène Wenger.

The 23-year-old has earned an extended break given his exploits in South Africa with Spain, and Wenger admits that an international tournament in the off-season can be detrimental to the club's training programme.

The Frenchman also explained that there is certainly no lack of spirit or motivation within the team, and that they are raring to go, starting with the Emirates Cup this coming weekend.

Wenger said: "Physically, it is an advantage when you don't play at the World Cup.

"And mentally, when you play in the World Cup final on 11 July, it is difficult to come back with complete recovery before the end of August.

"The squad are certainly highly motivated. They have recovered well from the disappointment and the best answer is always to show how hungry you are on the pitch."
