Worrying messages from Arsenal
There's been a worrying amount of Arsenal.com attention on our new defender Laurent Koscienly.
The man himself has been talking about learning English, getting into physical shape for the new season, playing for Poland or France; he's everywhere.
Other players have had their say on the new boy too; Johan Djourou, Thomas Vermaelen, and most recently Gaël Clichy.
The message? He's brilliant...what need do we have for another defender? Especially when the manager himself recently confirmed he's not in talks with ANYONE.
Today, Clichy said: "I think Laurent is going to be a good player for us. He is strong in the air and comfortable on the ball and that's what we need.
"Also Johan can play there [at centre back], Alex Song can too and Havard Nordtveit. So we're looking good – if the boss wants to add some players then he will but like I say we have a big squad and if we can all stay fit then we can do something."
It's easy to read too much into things, but given our recent record with transfers, these positive noises about our defence does not make me feel optimistic.
The message is very much: We have good defenders and strength in depth because we have untried youngsters and a player who's been injured for a year as backup.
I had to wait a few days for an explanation from Wenger about the Sol Campbell situation, and we didn't get much. Supposedly Sol wanted to leave, but how hard did the boss really try to keep him? We'll never know, but as I said a few months ago, a player like Campbell with his experience and history at the club, was clearly vital for us, and had a positive effect at the club for the latter half of last season.
Sure, the transfer window is pretty far from over, but given that we are supposedly not in talks with anybody at all when we still desperately need a defender AND a goalkeeper, not to mention some additions to the backroom staff, I'm not impressed with Wenger so far this summer.
