Manager Arsène Wenger is hoping that the fans will show restraint should former captain William Gallas return to the Emirates, playing for the opposition.
Gallas is on the verge of signing for North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, after reportedly having undergone a medical yesterday.
Spurs have offered the French international a one year deal, with an option to extend should he choose to. Manager Harry Redknapp says that signing the 33-year-old was a 'no brainer'.
Should Gallas line-up for Spurs in the North London derby, Wenger hopes that Arsenal fans will show some respect to the former defender.
Wenger said: "In the derby, Gallas might be exposed to fan chants and things like that.
"I hope it isn't the same [as it was for Campbell]. You always want your fans to show respect for people that have played for your club.
"We do not always get it because there are always excessive reactions but the biggest part of the Club will understand that.
"I don't think it is a major problem for Gallas. I personally accept completely that he goes to Spurs because he has not found an agreement with us and then we must accept he signs where he wants.
"He has an exaggerated bad reputation.
"I believe that he is a genuine winner. He wants things not to be done at 90 per cent and is completely focused and motivated to win.
"He can be, sometimes, a little bit brutal or impulsive in his reaction. But when you are a manager, he is not someone who talks behind your back.
"He is somebody who is straight and is completely focused on the game. You respect that."
