Arsène Wenger was surprised at the number of high scoring games seen so far in the Premier League.
There have already been a number of 6-0 wins, and 38 goals scored last weekend, leading some to believe that defensive football might be on the way down.
However, the Frenchman believes at the start of the season teams play with less fear, which means that even sides who will later fight against relegation play a more open game to begin with.
Wenger said: "It is too early to say the art of defending has been forgotten.
"I believe at the start of the season some teams are fitter than others. Also the fear to go down is not completely integrated in their minds.
"That changes after four or five games so let's see if that trend continues.
"I am not completely convinced because many teams play without handbrakes so it explains maybe a bit the high scores, but that will not last."
On the subject of defence, the manager revealed that he would be bringing Laurent Koscienly straight back into the team for the trip to Blackburn this Saturday.
The centre-back was sent off on his Premier League debut against Liverpool and as a result missed the Blackpool game through suspension, but the Frenchman will join Denilson in returning to the squad.
Wenger said: "We have Denilson back in the squad. Koscielny is back from suspension and he will be involved. The situation of the squad on the health front is quite good."
"Of course Nasri, Bendtner and Ramsey are still injured but everyone else is available."
