Teenage wonderkid Jack Wilshere has been told not to expect a guaranteed recall into the England Under-21 squad as the midfielder was kept on the substitute's bench against Portugal.
The 18-year-old was the subject of a police arrest last week, having acted as a 'peacemaker' during a brawl outside a nightclub in London.
He was eventually released on bail, but England assistant manager Stuart Pearce observed that Wilshere was still distracted from the events, and was constantly on the phone with his agent regarding the newspaper reports.
Pearce said: "Leading into the Portugal game Jack was swapping phone calls with his agent and one or two people in regards to newspaper articles.
"We just did not feel it was right to start him.
"I have seen a touch more focus. Jack's attitude has been very good. We think his focus has been much better.
"But it's difficult for a young man. There are a lot of pressures on young players and it's my job to read these situations as best I can.
"I will let the players know the team on the day of the game and seven or so will be disappointed."
