Parlour: You need luck to win the league

Former Arsenal hero Ray Parlour believes the current Arsenal team have been unlucky in recent times, unlike some of the teams he played in.

The former midfielder, who was part of the Gunners' famous Invincibles in 2004, says that even Arsenal's great teams of the past needed a little luck along the way to winning trophies.

Parlour reflected on the unbeaten season, saying: "I think it's going to be very difficult [to go unbeaten] because you're always going to have a bad day.

"You need a lot of luck as well. We didn't really talk about it until six or seven games to go. We wanted to win the league first and foremost, but then suddenly the press brought up that we hadn't been beaten yet.

"It was an amazing situation because when you win the league you sometimes take your foot off the pedal and lose the next game. In 1998 we won the league against Everton when Tony Adams scored and then we lost to Liverpool 4-0.

"But in 2004 we had to concentrate to the end because we had to go unbeaten. I think the last game of the season was Leicester and we were 1-0 down at half-time. It could have been blown out of the water then.

"But this is the luck you need. At Old Trafford in August, Van Nistelrooy hit a penalty in the last minute of the game to get Man United to win. He crashes it on the bar and Martin Keown jumped up like a lunatic.

"We could have lost it in August, so you need that little bit of luck along the way."
