Wenger offers goalkeeper a new deal

Manager Arsène Wenger has revealed that he has offered a new deal to promising talent Wojciech Szczesny.

The Pole's reputation amongst the Emirates faithful rose in midweek when he put in an impressive performance against Newcastle United in the Carling Cup.

The Frenchman also admitted that he is keen to give Szczesny more playing time, but with Manuel Almunia returning from injury and Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone waiting in the wings, there is perhaps too many goalkeepers at the club.

Wenger has in the past however, signalled Szczesny as a future 'number one' at the club.

He said: "We are negotiating with him and try to extend his contract. He wants to stay, I want him to stay, so basically [a] plus plus [a] plus should be [a] plus!

"An offer has been made.

"I want to play him but our job is about competition.

"However he has the qualities to fight for the position and that is what I wish.

"Everybody advised me to buy goalkeepers and suddenly you ask me the reverse question that I have too many good goalkeepers!

"However Wojciech is a very talented young one. We brought him in and he made the effort to come to the Club at the age of 16.

"He wants to be successful here and I want him to be successful here, so normally it should work out."
