Arsenal Football Club yesterday issued an appeal to rescind defender Laurent Koscielny's red card against Newcastle United.
The new signing, who has earned his second red card of the season, was adjudged to have caused a professional foul when he brought down striker Nile Ranger.
Koscielny, who was signed from Lorient in the summer, was also sent off at Liverpool on his Arsenal debut.
Manager Arsène Wenger, who believes that fellow centre back Sebastian Squillaci was on hand to cover, said: "It was not only harsh but not right.
"If you look carefully at the situation Squillaci is completely covering Koscielny.
"It has to be a clear goalscoring opportunity and for the player to be the last man. It was neither. It is completely harsh."
The Football Association, who will hear the club's appeal on Tuesday, said: "Arsenal have submitted a claim of wrongful dismissal, after the dismissal of Koscielny for the denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity."
