Arsenal legend and former winger Robért Píres yesterday extended his thanks to manager Arsčne Wenger for the opportunity to play again at the highest level.
The 37-year-old is expected to sign for Aston Villa before the weekend, needing to pass a stringent medical before putting pen to paper.
Píres had been released by Spanish side Villarreal in the summer and has been training at London Colney building up his match fitness.
With the Villains experiencing a shortage of players and key personnel, Píres could go straight into the squad travelling to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.
Píres said: "I just have to convince the team doctor and I hope to sign before the end of the week.
"The medical is set for Thursday or Friday, so we'll see first what happens in the last meeting with Gerard Houllier and everyone else from Aston Villa. Things are going well, though.
"It [the deal] would be for six months or longer, but there are still some things to sort out, although I assure everyone it's not in terms of finances."

"I've been training with Arsenal for two months and I'm happy and in good form.
"I would like to thank Arsčne Wenger – because of him I'm going to be able to experience the highest level again."
