Vermaelen out for longer

Defender Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out will till 2011, after failing to recover from his Achilles problem.

The Belgian international has not played a competitive game of football since appearing in his country's Euro 2012 qualifier against Turkey on 7 September.

Manager Arsène Wenger conceded that he had no explanation as to why it's taken so long for his first choice central defender to shake off the injury, only saying that he wasn't expecting Vermaelen to be back this year.

Despite being earmarked for a return in October, Wenger said:
"Vermaelen is in a [protective] boot.

"We want him back and I hope he will be back soon, but not before January."
