Wilshere: Carling Cup was to be the catalyst

Midfielder Jack Wilshere has admitted that the Carling Cup was to be the catalyst that would propel the club to win other trophies.

It was always thought that the loss at Wembley triggered this side's catastrophic collapse, resulting in Arsenal now clinging onto third place in the league.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Wilshere said: "We have to win something and we won't win if we keep thinking about those two weeks.

"It [the Carling Cup final defeat] was devastating, even now the boys still say 'we could have got a trophy there'.

"There was always the psychological feeling if we won that, it would give us the confidence to win more."
