Time for a much-needed break

Time for a much-needed break

Our terrible end-of-season form continued yesterday with a 2-2 draw at Fulham, confirming a 4th place finish for the season.

Not a great deal to say about the game itself, except that Robin van Persie scored another fine goal for his 21st of the season, getting himself to within two away of joint top Premier League scorers Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez, despite playing half as many games.

For me, he's our best player, and if only he weren't injured so often I'd say we should build the team around him, and possibly even make him captain if/when Fabregas leaves. It's a shame his best form came when the rest of the team were doing so badly, but if not for him we'd probably have ended up 5th of 6th. Credit to him for keeping going.

Thomas Vermaelen also showed us how dearly he's been missed, with some brave and perfectly-executed defending on the goal-line to deny Danny Murphy. Whether just one player could've made that big a difference to our defence this season is debatable, but it couldn't do any harm. With both Vermaelen and van Persie, there's definitely a winning mentality that most of our other players lack, and I do feel if both of them had played more games we wouldn't have collapsed quite so spectacularly.

Anyway, right now I'm sick of talking/writing/thinking about Arsenal and I'm glad the season is over. There'll be plenty of time to analyse things over the summer, but for now I'm grateful for the break.

The Champions League final should be good, as I really think Man United will finally be exposed for how average they've been this season. Barca are on a different planet from anyone in the Premier League, and if it weren't for the fact that this happened to be United's 19th title, no one would be hyping this team up as much as they are. Perhaps this is just wishful thinking on my part, but I reckon this could be a thrashing.

I'm also intrigued to see how things will be at Chelsea next season. With an ageing squad in need of some new blood, and yet another new manager coming in, they'd be my favourites to drop out of the top four next year. Then again, I thought they'd struggle for fourth this season and look how that ended up.

The sad reality is, they'll probably snap up Porto's exciting young manager André Villas-Boas and finish above Arsenal again because we keep sticking with Wenger. And while I wouldn't exactly advocate us changing manager every two seasons, it hasn't exactly stopped Chelsea winning things has it?
