Villarreal boss Marcelino has revealed that a deal is nearly done with Arsenal for the signing of Gabriel Paulista. Paulista has been near a move to the Emirates for quite a few days now, but this is the strongest hint yet as Marcelino hinted the deal is imminent.

Paulista has been left out of the most recent Villarreal squad, which travels to Levante this afternoon, further fueling speculation, and Marcelino has confirmed that the player is nearing the exit door. The Daily Star has quoted the boss as saying this ahead of today’s match:

“It wouldn’t be fair if we don’t win at Levante and blame it on [the Gabriel speculation].”

“He’s a player who’s still wanted in the dressing room and remains very important to us. At the moment, he’s still part of the squad because we don’t know what will happen.”

“Everything points towards the negotiations going in one direction, but until then he’s still ours.”

The strongest indication yet that Arsenal could have a new defender in their ranks very soon. Problems of course still remain over a work permit for the player, with Wenger recently venting his frustration over the process. Arsenal is still said to be looking to push the deal over the line though and will be made to sweat over the decision.

The report also links Joel Campbell with a move in the other direction with Arsenal keen to push through a deal. We will have to wait and see if there is any truth to this. Good bit of business, Paulista is. He should provide good cover for Arsenal during the final stretch of the season.
