Such is the nature of social media and football fans, Mesut Ozil’s latest quotes will no doubt see him ridiculed.

The World Cup winner said:

“Should I continue to improve and stay fit, I want to get my hands on the Ballon d’Or in the coming years,” he is quoted by The Metro.

“I am a world champion and play at a top club in the Premier League. I am convinced that it can work out.”

Love it, Mesut; absolutely love it.

The former Real Madrid attacking-midfielder has this real zest for life, football and Arsenal; it doesn’t diminish with every nonsensical criticism from pundits, rival fans and, rather surprisingly, our own fans – sidepoint: there will be a huge amount of respect awarded to the first pundit to do their research on Ozil and see him for the genius that he is.

Ozil, of course, has to surpass the phenomenal duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – something no one is surely capable of(?) – however, there’s definitely a very real chance that the 26-year-old could pass international team-mate Manuel Neuer to make the shortlist.

What annoys me about things like this is that, Mesut Ozil, an exceptionally gifted World Cup winner, will be laughed at for such claims. However, for some baffling reason, there is a growing feeling amongst the English media that Harry Kane maybe, just maybe, will be there or thereabouts come the end of the year for the top individual award in football. Words fail me.
