Arsenal lifted their second consecutive and 14th total Community Shield win courtesy of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s superb first half effort. Chamberlain recieved a pass from Theo Walcott on the edge of the area before dipping his shoulder and cutting inside of Azpilicueta and curling his effort beyond Courtois.

Fantastic strike from Alex and more importantly a demonstration of just how much he has grown in stature. His goal was the single most incisive moment in attack from Arsenal in the first half, and arguably the entire game as Cazorla and Gibbs both saw rather tame efforts smothered by Courtois.

He rose to the occasion and made himself accounted for when Arsenal needed it most, and we could be witnessing the start of a rise to stardom. Alex is becoming a star turned for Arsenal, coming on in leaps and bounds since his arrival.

He went from a promising and talented squad member to an integral piece to the Arsenal puzzle and has shown over the past few seasons just how important he is to the side. Last year in particular, Alex really began to take matches by the scruff of the neck and was one of Arsenal’s most featured players until suffering an injury.

His pace, and more importantly his change of pace, is a crucial weapon down the flanks, and combined with his strength he is a bit of a battering ram and real handful for defenders. Previously he lacked the end product to go with it, but has added that in recent years and for me he is irreplaceable in the XI.

Today was about more than a goal for Alex (although superbly taken), it was about putting his foot down and seizing his rightful place in the side. Arsenal will challenge for honours this season, and the Ox will be in the thick of it. Who needs a fox in the box? We have an Ox in the box!
