Former Liverpool defender and current Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that an early exit from the Champions League could help Arsenal in the title race.

The Gunners face the possibility of a group stage exit after losing their opening two matches to Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos, which leaves their hopes lying on a difficult double-header against currently unbeaten German champions Bayern Munich.

Whilst Arsenal have struggled on the continent, their performances domestically have been much better and yesterday’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United was the icing on the cake in Arsenal’s season so far.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday programme after the victory at the Emirates, which saw Arsenal rise to second in the table, Carragher stated his belief that an early European exit would be beneficial to the Gunners.

“Arsenal are never going to win the Champions League, they always go out at the quarter-final stage at best. So if they go out earlier it may actually be advantageous to them in terms of the title race.”

“Arsenal need things to go for them this season and if they are going to win the league. They are not the best team, Manchester City are, they have the best squad.”

“For them to win the title, it may be that they may need something and it could be going out of the Champions League.”

Comparing Arsenal to Manchester City at this early stage is difficult, although the edge has to lie with the Citizens given their dominant attacking displays shown so far this season.

Their aims lay in Europe though, as they look to overcome the struggles they’ve faced in the Champions League, so the distraction could be beneficial to Arsenal as the season progresses.

The Gunners likely face both Manchester sides in direct competition for the title, as Chelsea seem too far off the pace at this stage. Arsenal got one over United at the weekend but it’s still clear there’s work to do this season.

I agree actually. But we all know Wenger will send his best out against Bayern. Let’s just pray those lads can give their all in the Premier League only days later..
