While Wigan is popularly known as more of a rugby town, the Latics rose through the English Leagues between 1995-2005 when they moved up from the basement of the old Third Division all the way to the Premier League after being purchased by sporting goods magnate Dave Whelan. Wigan almost made a major statement by nearly beating out defending Champions Chelsea in their first ever Premier League fixture- only to be undone by the last kick of the game when Hernan Crespo made it 1-0. The side have reputation for unearthing future stars from obscure parts of the globe.
