Alex Iwobi has impressed in his first team outings this off season, raising quite a few eyebrows with his pace and clever movement on the left flank. He rounded off a good showing in Singapore with an even better one yesterday against Lyon, notching a goal and terrorizing the back line with his pace and direct running.

He nearly had a second as well, but was judged offside after finishing neatly from Giroud’s knock down header, and Iwobi made quite the impression.

Wenger told Arsenal’s official website after the match that he plans to keep the player at the club this season rather then send him loan, so the young winger could be set for more first team opportunities.

He of course said the same thing about Joel Campbell and Yaya Sanogo following their performances in last year’s Emirates Cup opener against Benfica, before loaning the pair out in January.

There is nothing to suggest Iwobi couldn’t be set for the same fate, but he at least has the next five months to stake his claim. Could he break into the team this season?

It will be supremely difficult with the likes of Sanchez, Welbeck, Walcott, and Chamberlain all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Not to mention fellow fringe players Joel Campbell and Serge Gnabry, assuming they are still at the club by the time the season starts. The starlet has shown he will be a real player some day, but the Premier League is a totally different beast altogether.

Let’s see how he gets on with a few league appearances under his belt. What do you think gooners? Does Iwobi have what it takes to break into the team this season?

One response to “Could this starlet break into the Arsenal first team this season?”

  1. Sean Williams says:

I doubt if we will see much of Iwobi in the gunners squad this season. I think Wenger is showing the young lad respect and trying to give Iwobi a boost. This season will not really figure too many youngsters. That will be next season. This season will be a massive push for the Premier League title and to win that he needs the established players. Not worth undermining all the youngsters confidence if they are playing and our challenge goes sour. I do hope Wenger brings in a quality DM. Coquelin cannot and should not play up to 65 games this coming season, and what happens if he gets an injury? Wakey Wakey Wenger. Do you remember what happened early last season when we did not have Coquelin? We were shipping a few goals and losing games.
