Jack Wilshere returned to the Arsenal XI today for the first time since November and some would say he staked his claim for a place in the side. He lined up along side Aaron Ramsey in the centre of the park and pulled the strings for many threatening Arsenal attacks.

Did he take his chance? I would be inclined to say he did. Although Coquelin being dropped to the bench was perhaps more of a resting procedure and not indicative of his form, Wilshere showed he can influence the game. He is much more attack minded than Coquelin, and looks to drive forward when Arsenal have possession.

Wilshere was exceptional today I thought, especially in the first half. The first chance of the match fell to him, and if not for a heavy touch he would have been through on goal.

He had another pop at goal minutes later, but he blasted it over before he created yet another chance, this time setting up Ozil.Wilshere today showed he can both provide and protect, a crucial combination to have in the side. He could be an interesting option to have going forward, as he offers Wenger something different.

He was highly involved in the second half as well, although perhaps not as instrumental. Several flowing moves went through Wilshere even if he did not provide the final ball and I would say his performance today certainly didn’t hurt his case.

What do you think gooners? What did you make of Wilshere’s performance tonight?

Would rather have seen Theo or Rozza start.
