One of the major talking points from last night’s clash with Liverpool was the performance of the makeshift back line, and more specifically Calum Chambers’ dodgy first half performance. The Englishman endured a bit of a nightmare in the opening spell of the match, giving the ball away carelessly in possession and scrambling to get in position defencively.

He played centre half alongside Gabriel in the absence of Mertesacker and Koscielny, and looked daunted in the face of Liverpool’s high pressure. To be fair, the Englishman hadn’t started a competitive match for a few months, and being thrust into such an occasion seemed to get the better of him.

He improved in the second though, so it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the lad, but should he be sent on loan to improve? While his performance yesterday may suggest so, I reckon the player needed this kind of hardship to learn from. How easily we forget he is still just 20 years old and is still enduring his learning curve.

Last season was only his first season at a big club, after making just 19 appearances for Southampton, most of which came from right back. I won’t sugarcoat it, he was dreadful during some spells last night, but bumps and bruises along the way can be expected in a young player’s journey.

It is harsh to hold this performance over the lad’s head for too long, young players should be afforded the luxury of a few mistakes here and there. His much improved second half performance suggest he has the necessary mental strength and willpower to overcome adversity, and he should be given more opportunities to play.

His quality is there to see, and once his confidence and composure returns, alongside much more experience of course, we will see the great centre back that lies within him. The answer is no (he should not go on loan) for me, he should continue his education at Arsenal.

He should chalk this up as a bad day at the office and get on with it. Not to mention the obvious lack of cover in the centre back position means it would beĀ ill advised to send him out now.

What do you think gooners? Should Chambers be sent on loan?

The lad is a 20 year old full back. Other 20 yr olds he loans out. Chambers is a good player with plenty of potential. He should have not been thrown in the deep end at CB against top opponents in a crucial match. Why do we have always seem to suffer playing with first team players missing so early in the season?

No He should be played for short periods regularly.

He looks set to be another Carl Jenkinson – a good player who showed early promise but ultimately won’t get the games to keep at a strong level. A loan would be a good option for him I think.
