Arsenal have signed 23-year-old Egyptian international Mohamed Elneny from FC Basel, the club has officially announced today.

Elneny signs after vast speculation that he would join the Gunners, with Arsene Wenger remaining confident throughout the week and publicly confirming that he believes the deal would go ahead imminently.

Now, Elneny has signed for the Gunners and could make his debut in this weekend’s Premier League clash at Stoke City- where Arsenal will look to regain their advantage at the top of the table after Leicester City drew level on points last night.

Elneny, a defensive midfielder, will provide cover for Francis Coquelin during his absence and will compete with the French midfielder for a first-team spot when Coquelin returns from his current issue- with the latest stating he may return in mid-February.

This presents Arsenal’s first dip into the transfer market this window and Elneny is the first senior outfield player that Arsene Wenger has signed since bringing Gabriel Paulista to North London in January 2015.

Everyone at ArsenalMania wishes Elneny all the best at Arsenal. You can follow our newest recruit on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ElNennyM
