Two youngsters have emerged as viable options for a solid backline in Arsenal’s future – Calum Chambers and Hector Bellerin. Fresh off their 20th birthday, both defenders have shown great maturity in the Premier League at such a young age. With both players being featured at the right-back position, which defender is better?

Already called up for his first appearance for the senior English national squad in a clash with Norway, Calum Chambers emerged as a promising talent for both club and country. The young Englishman has displayed a great deal a poise in the back for the Gunners, with solid performances in many matches during this year’s campaign. Chambers started his career as a midfielder, but quickly showed a unique ability to adapt defensively as a centre-back and right-back. Featured mainly on the right side in Wenger’s back line, Chambers has shown class, with a bit of room to grow. Chambers is competing for a starting position in Wenger’s XI with the likes of Mathieu Debuchy and Hector Bellerin. With so much talent in the club, appearances don’t come easy at Arsenal – just ask Theo Walcott. Calum’s solid performances in a wins against Manchester City, Everton, and West Ham proved any doubters that the youngster can perform against top flight English clubs, no matter the circumstances. The signing of Calum Chambers in July of 2014 has proven crucial in the club’s success this season.

Loaned out to Watford to get some minutes under his belt, pacey Spanish international Hector Bellerin has fought his way vigorously into Arsene Wenger’s starting XI. Since his promotion to the senior team at the start of the year, Bellerin has emerged as another crucial piece to Arsenal’s bright future to come. In recent weeks, Hector Bellerin has stepped up immensely, featuring in five of Arsenal’s six matches in March. If you ask me, it’s about time Vicente del Bosque calls up Bellerin – get the lad some experience with mentors like Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, and Jordi Alba. Could you imagine the pace Spain would have win Alba and Bellerin flying up the wings? Incredible. Hector Bellerin has displayed a sense of maturity way beyond his years – becoming a regular in the Premier League at just 20 years of age. The Spanish youngster is opening eyes all around Europe with his play – deserving so.

Picking one of these youngsters to play comes with great difficulty – with Chambers comes the build of a great defender and the mindset of an experienced soldier; with Bellerin comes startling pace and excitement. I believe the edge goes to Hector Bellerin, the lad is currently performing at a level unimaginable at such a young age. Both great options to have at the club, proving Wenger’s investments to be paying off quite well. Any success this campaign can surely be credited to Chambers and Bellerin for filling in for an injury plagued Mathieu Debuchy. With Debuchy returning soon, what will Arsene Wenger do? I’m not quite sure even Wenger knows, only time will tell.
