ArsenalMania spoke exclusively to We Are The Ocean’s guitarist Alfie Scully about his music experiences- and the fact that he is a massive Gooner.

The Essex-based band have had a busy year, releasing their fourth album, but that hasn’t stopped Alfie from following his beloved club in what has been a successful year for the Gunners.

Growing up close in an era led by the heroics of Thierry Henry and co, Alfie has followed Arsenal closely for years.

“I’ve followed Arsenal pretty much since I was old enough to figure out what a football team was, I didn’t live far from Islington. Thierry Henry is my hero, I must have been around 14 or 15 (when he was in his prime).”

“The magic he did on the field was incredible. He was a great hero that could create something out of nothing.”

Henry is definitely a tough act to follow but Alfie believes a number of the Gunners current contingent can emulate his success at Arsenal in the coming years.

“I’d back loads of them for different reasons. Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez, Hector Bellerin. The main thing is not only scoring great goals but assisting other people with their goals.”

“Mesut Ozil is the big one, there’s a reason why he’s probably going to break the Premier League record.”

It’s difficult for Alfie though, who is surrounded by Tottenham supporters in the band, and he has to put up with the generic North London banter on a daily basis.

Whilst praising Arsenal’s greatest rivals and their players though, he doesn’t believe they are too much of a threat just yet- but he admits if Spurs did achieve success, there would have to be words with his band-mates.

“They have their little moments but it’s all it is really, I think they’re a great team but I’m not too worried about them. In both teams there is great England players, like Harry Kane, so you give them their dues.”

“If they became successful I think we’d have to have words but I can’t see it happening. We’ll have to take it day by day.”

As a massive Gooner, Alfie would love to perform at the home of Arsenal and has a great song in mind to get emotions pumping before a big game.

“I’d have to go with ‘Do it together’, it’s got a big rift and a massive chorus. Doing a gig at the Emirates Stadium would be phenomenal.”

We Are The Ocean have just released a new single, ‘Hey Now’, a cover of UK-based band London Grammar, a song Alfie is really pleased to be covering.

“We found out about them last year, they’re really cool and they had one of those new sounds. You really hear the emotions from the band and the singer, it’s coming from a good place. We got the opportunity to perform a song in the BBC Radio One live lounge and it went on from there.”

Yawn. More Gooners not worried about Spurs, but still can’t stop talking about them.
