Arsenal have allegedly entered the race for Shakhtar Donetsk striker Luiz Adriano. Adriano has been in sensational form over the past few seasons especially and is also linked with Liverpool. The Brazilian joined Shakhtar in 2007, quickly becoming a household name in Ukraine. He is the club’s all team leading scorer and has previously remained loyal to the club despite interest from top outfits.

He has recently dropped a bombshell however, saying it will be difficult to stay in Ukraine once his contract expires in December.

“My plan is to respect the contract, which has not been renewed and will expire in December 2015,” Adriano told reporters.

“I am in a good moment of my career and we’ll do what will be best for me and for the club.”

“With my contract set to expire and many good performances, it’ll be difficult to stay in Ukraine.”

Naturally the rumour mill has begun churning and Arsenal is amongst the clubs being mentioned in the race for the player.

Adriano is a proven goal scorer, having bagged in impressive 21 goals in 42 Champions League appearances for Shakhtar. He struck 9 in just 7 matches in the competition this season, while becoming the competition’s second player to score five goals in one match.

With his contract due to expire, he should be available for a cut price in the summer. Despite the player saying he intends to respect his contract, his club may look to cash in as opposed to losing him for free. Liverpool are also in the race, so Shakhtar could yet receive a handsome sum if a bidding war ensues.

What do you think fellow gooners? Is Adriano a player Arsenal should be pursuing? He will face quite some competition with the form Giroud is in, but some would argue that Arsenal are still in need of another out and out centre forward.
